Evaluation Question 4&5

The main media branch our independent film will use to market and distribute it self to reach higher recognition will be the internet. Sites such as youtube, which are littered with online videos that can also be shared on social networking sites such as Facebook and Tweeter. To improve on the amount of views your video has. However, due so sheer amount of videos posted on youtube, your video can get lost in pile. Hense you would have to make your video very interesting and original. Suchas this video parody of the classic game Mario Bros.

In addition to the internet our film will be shown at the Green on the screen cinema, Upper Street in Angel. To reach a bigger audience. Also our film, along with all the AS media films, will be released on dvd. 200 copies will be issued to distribute to family and friends to watch and pass on our films, for them to gain recognition.

EVALUATION-Who would be the audience for your media product?

EVALUATION QUESTION 4/5: DISTRIBUTION/ ATTRACTING AUDIENCE

When it comes to distribution our film wont receive a mass amount of exposure like most big films, because well.... its not a BIG film or backed by BIG firms like

So in terms of getting our film out there we have to turn to the internet's free sites to get our some exposure

because lets face it... Its not going to be shown in the cinema (as in released in cinemas i.e more than one)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Youtube:
Pros:
-Its free so no costs
-Its used by loads of people (100s of millions) - Almost everyone who know about the internet also know about YOUTUBE = potential mass exposure.... MANY VIDEOS HAVE WENT VIRAL JUST OVERNIGHT i.e Friday by Rebecca Black... although a music video it conforms to the concept that films can go viral and receive Mass exposure via Youtube
-Positive feedback as well as your film getting rated can be very useful!

Cons:
- Things can get lost on Youtube
- Bad comments - Hateful comments, although some could be taken as constructive criticism
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
VIMEO
Pros
- Similarly to youtube, its free so no costs
- Gains exposure as people use it aswell
- The positive or constructive feedback can also be very useful

 CONS:
- NOT AS BIG AND AS POPULAR AS YOUTUBE SO RELATIVELY SMALL AUDIENCE AND LITTLE EXPOSURE

THIS IS A SCREEN GRAB OF OUR POSTED ON VIMEO.COM

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Facebook
Pros:
- Arguably the largest and most popular social networking site on the planet - although twitter is up and coming- Either wayy this results in MASS exposure similarly to youtube. With over 500million users
- Fan pages/groups and profiles can be made on facebook to advertise
- Could be shared amongst family and friends who could share it with there friends and so on.

Cons:
- Yet again a lot of competition on facebook from other people doing the same thing
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Twitter
Pros:
- The second most popular social networking site with over 18 million users (in 2009, imagine how big it is now!)

Cons:
- Alot of competition
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There are many more social netwroking sites, but these being the main ones used by millions of people ( MYSPACE IS DEAD) around the world, would make it the main ones used.
 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INDEPENDENT FILM SITES THAT ARE MADE TO HELP FILMS BUY STUDENTS AND UP AND COMING FILM MAKERS GET EXPOSURE.
 1)  http://www.firstlightonline.co.uk/
The site first light helps up and coming film makers get there films out.... They are a lottery funded organization

Sunday times competition
Various competitions are held on this site and awards are given for many different categories 'Sunday Times Competition' is just one of many. This give young film makers a chance to compete and also gain exposure because the winner not only gets an award but also has there film shown as #1.
The winning film for this competition was HEY JUMPER  by Elishama Udorok
Hey Jumper by Elishama Udorok at First Light

 2) http://www.indiemoviesonline.com
Although less targeted at helping independent young film makers gain exposure this is more focused on the viewing end as it gives film fans a place to watch films for FREE. And the word FREE always gets people, so i can assume this site has a lot of users as the banner says 'best place to watch free movies' this can be used well to gain exposure and reach target audiences.

DVDs - 200 copies
Although were not backed by big film making industries, we are on the other hand backed by city and islington college who will distribute 200 DVD copies of our film to people in our AS media year. Along with this we are also able to place it on you tube :)

Film screening - SHOWN AT GREEN SCREEN CINEMA
on top of that our films are going to be screened in the cinema and according to Bernard apparently one of the 'best cinemas in London'. So its not completely budget :D... This means our films are going to be distributed in two ways via cinema and also via DVDs, we also have the personal choice of placing it on youtube :) and creating a twitter, facebook for it :)

LETS NOT FORGET THE OLDEST METHOD OF ATTRACTING AN AUDIENCE

 ...WORD
                 OF  MOUTHHHH

WE CAN ALWAYS TELL PEOPLE TO WATCH OUR FILMS AND WATCH THE NEWS SPREAD :)

EVALUATION-How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Aykut plays the caretaker in our movie and is represented as mysterious and slightly creepy in comparison to the guy the in stepfather. What makes these two characters similar is that they both are mysterious characters as they both go about their business. In the opening they dont seem to be mental or anything like that but we can get that the feeling that something is not quite right in the opening.

Evaluation Question 4/5

No-one wants to go through the trouble of making a great film and then having no-one watch it so the following are techniques of ways we can reach an audience.
  • First light
This is a great source of media distribution it gives low budget film makers an opportunity to have their film shown to a wider audience plus prizes can be won
  • Sunday times

  • Indie movies online
Some of the movies on indie movies online that I watched were of a more high quality I feel as if putting our film on a website like that could only harm our already low credibility
  • DVD - 200 copies
Our film being distributed with 200 DVDs is a big opportunity to gain the film some more exposure however the audience will be limited to only friends and family and we wont make any money from this method
  • Film screening
Our films going to be screened at a local cinema 'one of the top cinemas in London'(according to Bernard) its going to be shown to all of he other media students

  • Vimeo
  • Facebook

Facebook is a good way to have people watch your films and if people keep reposting your film eventually it will have an audience that is beyond estimation.
  • Youtube
when speeking of trying to make a film known on through youtube you have to mention Panic Attack on a low budget but using special effects this film accumulated ove 6 million views on youtube doing beetter than a lot of hollywood blockbusters do at the cinema.

However our fillm is not panic attack and does not have the special effects that will entice action boffin s to keep on clicking on it

Evaluation Question 3

Fortunately the target audience for our film is everyone in our group so that helped us creatively because all we had to do was think of what would make an interesting film to us.

In the feedback session in class we got the opportunity to see what 16 of our target audiences thought of our film.
Below is the link to an animation of the kind of person that would watch our film.

EVALUATION QUESTION 3: TARGET AUDIENCES!!

As stated before OUR TARGET AUDIENCE WILL BE VERY YOUNG... Particularly between the ages of 15-18, 15 been the minimum age for most thriller films.
The call for such a young audience is because of our cast, audiences tend to empathize with characters better when they are of the same age or sex. Pushing it onto my other point, our main target audience would be a male audience, mainly because the cast is male and the title sequence contains football... Somethings girls hardly ever take interest in...

Now its established the target audience is
Aged 15 - 18

AND THAT IT IS A MALE AUDIENCE

WHAT IS MY TARGET AUDIENCE GOING TO BE LIKE:

My target audience been teenagers would be a very current and well, trendy, out going target audience.
They are often very obsessed with fashion, clothes, trainers, hats and much more material things.

They'd usually be very regular cinema goers, shoppers (topman, choice, river island etc...)... They'd usually be a college/university and the upper bound of secondary school (Years 10 and Years 11) some may not even go college and have a part time job! They'd eat mainly fast foods such as MacDonald and burger king.

THE POINT THAT TRYING TO GET ACROSS IS MY AUDIENCE IS THE MALE TEENAGER!, who likes action, thrillers(... Although my genre is mainly just thriller and less of action...) An active and social individual

Evaluation Question 2

Inspiration

Because the main character of our thriller is a demented janitor/caretaker, I took influence from the mental janitor from the t.v. sit-com scrubs. Though the character is suppose to be an over the top comedic character, at times the audience could see that he hated being look down at because of his position in the hospital that he works for hierarchy. Plus the Janitors build is intimidating it self, his tall and broad and almost every character when in the same scene as the janitor tilts there head to make eye contact.

My Characters Representation

So I felt that my character, because his a working class Caretaker for a college, he could possible be spiteful that he hasn't had much success in the past. Also possible because his at such a lower position in the class system, and his works hierarchy, that he is looked down at by other workers, and possibly student. Thats why he steals there football. Because the children's characters are a contrast to the Caretakers. There young and happy, there currently under going college so they dont have much responsibilities, other than college. So the Caretaker steals there ball, possibly out of spite, but more out of jealousy towards the happy students.

Costume

Though most janitors wear overalls. Because my character was a caretaker for a college. I observed what the caretakers in my college wore. And they tend to wear worn out, dark coloured cloths. So to mimic there look, I decided on a dark olive green jumper, and dark navy, slightly worn out jeans, black work mens boots and the blue ID badge case that all members of staff in our college wear. Separating it from the red ones the students wear.

EVALUATION QUESTION 2: Where our character(s) come from/ and Social Groups

OUR MAIN CHARACTER IS A JANITOR
Now that we know what he is, we had to present him in a certain way. Our best tool was the way he dressed, since we didn't have overalls and stuff we had to improvise.

To make him look like a janitor we dressed him in the typical attire that a janitor would wear to work

We took the whole 'casual dress' way from the Main character in the stepfather... Who looked like a typical man in his 30s/40s but still had that creepy eeriness about him.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOW WE'VE GOT THE WHOLE DRESS THING DOWN, too make a character really creepy
we gotta get someone with a weird stare... As seen in the stepfather the character had this scary weird look he'd give

i also discovered a link with characters like this when looking at the film 'the janitor's closet' as the main character in that also gave the same odd stare!
WE TOOK THIS STARE AND PUT IT ON OUR MAIN CHARACTER
OTHER QUALITIES INCLUDE.... The social class of the characters the janitor from the film 'The janitor' is the type of character that is ranked lowly in terms of social power or economical power. Often looked down upon because of his profession in comparison to higher ranked individuals i.e teachers, doctors etc.
Giving the character a reason to be cold, and hateful.... Kind of as if he is taking out his frustration on his environment... HE IS A GRUMPY/ANGRY character.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The kids playing football were meant to represent the social groups of children although lowest one the socio economic ranking (lower than the janitor). They on the other hand are a lot more carefree and represent the carefree stereotypical teenager whose only concerns are to have fun and party!!!!!
The best example of carefree teenagers are those from the teen DRAMA SKINS!
Although the idea of using teenagers came from the trailer of 'THE JANITOR'S CLOSET'
YOUNG CHARACTERS IN OUR FLIM
YOUNG CHARACTERS FORM 'THE JANITOR'S CLOSET'

SKINS

Evaluation Question 2

It was mostly common sense for our opening sequence to share some common shots with 'The Janitors Closet' mainly because the main characters are both janitors because our films plot was totally different from the Janitors closet we only imitated the way that the janitor was filmed. Intertextuality

  • Types of shots
  • How much camera time they receive
We did this because we liked the way that a sense of mysteriousness was created surrounding the janitor in The Janitors Closet

Almost Identical

Evaluation Question 1

This shot from "This Is England" reflected the low budget urban settings that our film has
